#GigatownWanaka? What is all the fuss about?!

Gigatown is a 12 month competition run by Chours New Zealand to decide who will be the first town in the Southern hemisphere to access a one gigabit per second (1Gbps) internet connection.  If Wanaka wins this national competition we will be well positioned to become a leading digital innovation hub for New Zealand, reshaping our economy and how our children learn, and changing the way our community will live, work and play.

How it works

Over the course of the 12 month competition (Nov 2013 – Nov 2014) Chorus will measure social media and online community engagement in support of each town in the competition.

The town with the loudest voice earns the most points and will be New Zealand’s first Gigatown and will receive broadband installation with a speed of 1 gigabit per second (one hundred times faster than ultrafast broadband).  We can earn points from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Flickr, WordPress and Tumblr. The hashtags for Wanaka are #gigatownwanaka or #gigatownwka

How you can help Wanaka win

  1. Go to www.gigatown.co.nz and choose the “Join Up” button – you will then be given a choice of signing up with Facebook, Google+ or your email. Please sign up with your email address (this gets us 10 points). You will be sent a comfirmation email  (check your junk folder!) and then you will need to scroll down and select Wanaka as your town.
  2. “Like” the GigatownWanaka and LakeWanakaNZ facebook pages and share posts with them. Every meaningful comment you make on registered business pages will earn us 1 point.
  3. If you have a business Facebook page, Tumblr account or WordPress blog you need to register the web address of these on the www.gigatown.co.nz at the “Make It Count” button. Then post to your pages and make sure you use the#gigatownwanaka or #gigatownwka
  4. Use the hashtags #gigatownwanaka or #gigatownwka on Instagram, Flickr, Twitter and Youtube when you upload any photos or videos.

Many thanks to Jamie Roy, Lake Wanaka Tourism and the Wanaka Sun for this content.
